Red King 1: The Squatter

Vivian Flameborn and Vladimir Darkbringer both had heard stories of a snow troll that had gathered a hoard of treasure. They scouted out the ruined building where the troll dwelled and led their warbands to confront the beast and claim its hoard for themselves. Unfortunately, they’d have to contend with each other as well as the troll.

Before setting out, Vladimir had used some of his spells to prepare. He successfully cast Awareness even though his apprentice, Beatrix, failed to cast it. He also cast Raise Zombie to create a decaying servant he named Zori. Vivian on the other hand didn’t have any spells to cast as preparation.

As the two wizards led their bands towards the ruins, they threw caution to the wind. One of her thieves, Snorri, rushed forward to pick up a treasure in a nearby ruin. Hans, an infantryman in Vivian’s employ, neared the troll’s lair and the beast stirred at his scent, emerging from the ruined building. Meanwhile, the first of a band of barbarians reached the area and began to advance on the troll’s lair.

The next round, Gabriel, Vladimir’s demon hunter, took a shot at Snorri with his crossbow and took out the thief. Hans and Sabastian, the treasure hunter, engaged the snow troll. After Vivian’s archer Kari took a shot at William, the tracker, Beatrix cast Fog to put a barrier between herself and the enemy archer to let her guide Annabelle off the table with a treasure. On the other side of the battle, Abigail cast Elemental Ball at Vladimir and a few of his followers. The necromancer was hurt and Ruby, one of his thieves, was taken down.

On the third round, Kari took a shot at an approaching barbarian and got a lucky critical hit. Vladimir patted out the flames on his cloak and created a wall of fog to try to prevent a repeat fireball. He then directed a few of his followers into the troll’s lair in hopes of pulling out the treasures while the snow troll was busy fighting Vivian’s followers on the far side of the ruin. Abigail was undeterred by the fog and rushed through it in order to take out Gabriel with an Elemental Bolt. Then Sabastian was wounded by the snow troll, but Hans managed to take it down with his axe and rush inside to confront Mila the mystic warrior before she could carry off a treasure.

After that, Beatrix and William had finished escorting Annabelle off the table with a treasure, but two barbarians had entered the battlefield nearby. William took a shot and missed before falling back towards the rest of Vladimir’s warband. Beatrix had bad luck though and botched a casting of Bone Dart that left her wounded and outnumbered. Back near the troll’s lair, Hans took out Mila opening the path for Vivian to enter the troll’s lair. Both group’s thugs continued to duel on the far side of the ruined building with Olga taking out Edward.

On the next round, things went from bad to worse for Vladimir’s warband. From inside the ruin, Vivian cast an Elemental Bolt and took out the necromancer from behind. Then Beatrix fell to the barbarians attacking her. Everyone other than William and Zori then fell to Abigail and the soldiers helping her.

The rest of the battle was William and Zori walking their treasure off the board with both barbarians and Vivian’s warband in pursuit. Wanting to seize the treasure for herself, Vivian tossed an Elemental Ball to take out the barbarians and William, but the tracker managed to evade the flames. She got one last chance before they escaped and managed to take down William, but Zori shambled off the board hauling the treasure behind it.

Zori escaping with the treasure gave Vladimir three treasures to Vivian’s two. Vivian’s thief Snorri died from the crossbow wound inflicted by Gabriel. On Vladimir’s side, William and Ruby were both badly wounded from their burns. Vivian recovered 6 Enchanted Vials, a Potion of Invisibility, Poison, and a Philtre of Fury. Vladimir found two grimoires (Planar Tear and Raise Zombie) and a Dazzling Cape.
