Welcome to the Game Night Blog Carnival for September! You can get more information about the carnival at the main Game Night site.
I first learned about Tsuro from an episode of Tabletop on Geek & Sundry. It looked like a fun game, so I ended up picking up a copy at Gen Con last year. The game can be played by anywhere from 2 to 8 players and only takes about 15 minutes to play. The rules are relatively simple and the game should be okay for kids as young as 8 years old.
Each player takes on the role of a dragon flying through the sky. Each turn, a player places a new tile from their hand on the board to extend their dragon’s path. If a dragon’s path takes it off of the board or it collides with another dragon, that player is eliminated. The last player on the board then wins the game.
While early in the game it’s easy to avoid other paths, once the board fills up it becomes much harder to manuever safely. The tiles have 2 path connection points on each side, but the paths twist and turn on the tiles so that its hard to trace a full path at a glance. Players can only play tiles at the end of their own path, but if another player is unfortunate enough to be at a path ending at the same open place then you get a chance to control where their dragon flies next. Especially later in the game, that often means that you can put them on a path that leads off the board to eliminate them.
The easy-to-learn rules and quick game length makes Tsuro a great game to play at the beginning of a game night while waiting for everyone to show up.
